Are You Getting Enough Sunlight?

Research shows that the right balance of sunlight is necessary for health & wellness.  Sunlight triggers the release of key brain hormones, specifically Serotonin.  Serotonin is considered the Happy chemical and most importantly, contributes to wellbeing and happiness.  Without sufficient sunlight, Serotonin levels can fall, resulting in a higher risk of major depression with seasonal pattern (formerly known as Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD).  For that reason, light therapy, either in the form of a Light Therapy Box or Indoor UV Tanning is recommended to counteract the effects of limited sunlight and increase the Serotonin levels.

Vitamin D

More importantly, sunlight plays a major role in the body’s production of Vitamin D.  It is estimated that 40% of American adults have a Vitamin D deficiency.  As a result, deficiencies translate into a higher risk for certain health consequences, including:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Certain Types of Cancer
  • Depression
  • Muscle Weakness
  • High Blood Pressure

Vitamin D is made when your skin is exposed to sunlight (UltraViolet B rays or UVB).  The best time for sunlight, especially during the summer, is midday.  At noon, the sun is at its highest point and the UVB rays are the strongest.  This means less time in the sun to make the much-needed Vitamin D.  Studies have shown that as little as 13 minutes of midday sun exposure during the summer three times per week is enough sunlight to maintain healthy levels of Vitamin D.  Because wearing sunscreen may reduce the effectiveness of the UVB rays, as the chemicals in sunscreen are designed to either reflect, absorb or scatter the sunlight, it is best to allow your body to absorb at least 13 minutes of midday sun before you apply the sunscreen.
